Virginia A. “Ginny” Jones, CRM, FAI

January 3, 1947 – December 10, 2021

Ginny’s comment the night she was welcomed into ARMA’s Company of Fellows in September of 2005 was an entreaty to our community to, “be proud of who we are, be proud to be records managers”.  Proud of her profession she was.  Ginny was also extremely passionate about what she did.  Ginny brought her years of knowledge and experience to countless records management professionals throughout her life.

Ginny’s career in records began like many ARMA Professionals records careers have, by chance.  It wasn’t chance that she stayed.  Ginny contributed to the Records Management profession for more than 50 years.  From a microfilm camera operator to analyst, consultant, manager and adjunct professor, Ginny has done it all.  Ginny wrote more than 500 magazine and journal articles and authored or co-authored at least 5 books.

Ginny originally joined ARMA in 1976 as a member of the Rio Grande Chapter.  She found being active in local chapters to be a rewarding way to learn team and leadership skills.  Later in life she also cherished the camaraderie and contacts she developed through participation.  She joined the Tidewater ARMA Chapter in the early 1990’s and quickly became a vital member of the chapter serving on the board and assisting the chapter as newsletter editor and a frequent seminar committee member.

During her time as newsletter editor the Newsletter won an honorable mention award from International.

At the national level Ginny served as project leader for at least 3 ARMA Standards and was frequently a speaker at the national conference.

In addition to her work with ARMA and her job at Newport News Waterworks where she retired from in 2017 after 24 years of service, she also was a fellow in the AIIM organization and served as part of the AIIM Standards Board and as a member of the U.S. delegation (TAG) to ISO TC 171 the international standards development committee for document management applications.

Ginny also was the principal of VAJones Associated which was a records management consulting and training firm that allowed her to work with businesses throughout the world.
